Baby gates are essential if you have stairs in your home. Baby safety gates can help ensure that crawling and walking babies or toddlers don't fall down stairs.
Some things to consider when using a baby gate with stairs:
Use baby gates at the bottom and top of the stairs.
Use baby doors that actually screw into the wall at the top of the stairs. Never use pressure-mounted baby safety gates at the top of stairs; use them at the bottom if you have one.
Keep items your toddler can use to climb over away from the gate (chairs, step stools, step ladders, large toys).
If your stairs have a wide landing, consider an extendable, configurable baby gate.
Raise the gate when your child is 5 or 6 months old and before they crawl and walk
Keep the gate up until you are sure your child can safely go up and down the stairs, usually around age 3 (after which they may learn how to get around the gate).
Baby gates in other areas
In addition to preventing false ls going down stairs, baby safety gates can double as other types of gates to protect other areas of your home, such as:
A room without child protection or you just want to keep your children away (eg kitchen)
A room or area where your dog spends time, separating the dog from the baby
